MUSEUM INNOVATIONS

Keelan is a first year MMSt student at the University of Toronto. An Alberta native, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology and Geography (honours) at the University of Lethbridge. Her most prevalent interests include cultural historical institutions, and the way in which cultures are presented to the public. Specifically, she enjoys work in collections, curations, and education, but she is willing to try anything once! Due to her ever-prevalent wanderlust, Keelan is interning at The Rooms in St. John’s Newfoundland. She is thrilled to take on the role of Assistant Curator and cannot wait to jump right in and get her hands dirty!

Julie Daechsel is entering her first year in the Master of Museum Studies. She holds an Honours BA in History and English from York University and thoroughly enjoyed studying a range of historical periods and people. Her love of museums and art galleries stems from a childhood of visiting cultural institutions with her grandmother and later with her classmates. When not at the iSchool, Julie works part-time as an Information Services Officer and Instructor at the Varley Art Gallery and as an occasional Collections Assistant and volunteer at the Markham Museum. In the little free time that remains, she enjoys reading, knitting, and spending time with her family.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY

Casarina completed her undergrad at McGill in African Studies, with a double minor in Italian Studies/History. Her interests include the interrelationships between language, literature, identity, migration and diaspora. In the world of museums and heritage, she wishes to explore how these issues relate to community-building, authencity, as well as, feelings of belonging in and around heritage sites and museums. Outside of academia, Casarina loves travelling, baking, searching for flowers, reading, and having long conversations over coffee.

PROGRAM REVIEWS

Samantha Kilpatrick is a soon-to-be second year museum studies student and a lifelong Torontonian, and is delighting in relearning the city as an adult and a trained museum professional. She is mostly interested in how the museum communicates with the visitor, and in removing as many barriers between the visitor and a good museum experience as possible. This summer, she will be completing her internship at the Toronto Zoo, conducting visitor research and solemnly informing anyone who asks that yes, she did get to pet a lion.

Previously OBJECT OF THE WEEK

Kesang is a first year MMSt student. Born and raised in Toronto, she completed her BFA at OCAD University majoring in Drawing and Painting and minoring in Art History. It was during her third year studies in Florence that a close engagement with works of the Italian Renaissance solidified her desire to further explore historical and museological studies. An artist herself, she is most concerned with galleries themselves and their efficacy in providing artists with the means to share their work with the public — and particularly, how alternative art spaces and practices act in resistance against these prevailing institutions.
